Thursday May 17, 2012 - 3:41:50 PM

kingfann: Colin Fraser returned today, apparently, but he won't be in the lineup. Gonna be very interesting to see what Sutter does with the lineup for Game 4 and beyond. Fraser may have to wait for the Kings to lose and/or someone on the fourth line to have a bad game.

kingfann: Just saw Willie Mitchell's comments on the Hanzal suspension on TSN. I'll post them later if I found them online, but he said something like, "I would have liked to have seen a longer suspension. Not because we're playing the Coyotes, but because there's been enough of these one-game suspensions, they do nothing, there needs to be a message sent. What if Dustin Brown breaks his neck on that play? Which he very easily could have. And Hanzal walks away with one game? What's it gonna take, Brown coming away in a wheelchair?"
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 3:14:42 PM

Thursday May 17, 2012 - 1:16:51 PM

naturallawyer: azking and jgonz are right. I think in the NFL is actually required by rule that everyone speak to the media. It's good for the league and the sport as a whole to include the new fan in the inner workings of the game so they can get more involved and learn more about the sport. If a new/casual fan sees a Tortorella presser, he/she would think NHL coaches are jerks and "the room" is a complete mystery where we can never know what goes on. There's a reason Hammond's site took off before the Kings even considered hiring him: lengthy, detailed block quotes from players, coaches, scouts, and GMs. Fans eat it up.
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 1:11:13 PM

jgonz69: Thats part of his fucking job to interact with the media. Torts is a total dick in my book.
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 1:03:42 PM

azking: That's not accurate. The media are there and serve a purpose because without them, the fans would never get any insight into what happens with teams. They would watch the game and that would be it. No stories, no interviews, no nothing. The tough questions get people the tough answers and part of being the face of an organization is that you are damn well required to answer the questions no matter how stupid you may or may not think they are as long as they aren't personal attacks. To think otherwise is ridiculous. NFL players in the Superbowl hate media day but they know it's part of the game. If a person doesn't want to do everything that is asked then hit the fucking road and they will find someone who will. Tortorella makes a shitload of money so if he doesn't think he is required to do these things, he is a complete fucking moron. Professional sports are not for introverts. Learn how to talk and be civil or go live on a farm somewhere and stroke yourself where nobody will bother you.

Thursday May 17, 2012 - 10:50:17 AM

lowdrive: hmm I don't have tickets to tonight's game. They haven't lost in the playoffs this year with me present. What to do what to do..
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 10:43:00 AM

greenking: I am sick of the media thinking everyone needs to be a great interview, so what if Tort's is a dick. i dont care. NYR fans dont care, they only ones who care about this crap is the media who in all markets think they are above an better than everyone else.
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 9:55:11 AM

kingscast: Torts was pretty good on TSN when he was out of his Tampa job. He is capable of communication. He's just a dick to the media. These people get paid to get quotes from him and he makes zero effort. I know Sutter would probably like to stay away from the media but at least he makes some effort and always gives a few half-decent quotes.
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 9:11:20 AM

kingfan_98: wow. donna summer died.
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 7:58:02 AM

azking: Tortorella kind of symbolizes why hockey is just not accepted a lot by mainstream media and people. The guy is basically a meathead with no people skills. He just looks like an idiot at the press conference with his gruff demeanor, short one word answers and that doesn't help move the meter in terms of perception that this is a sport of "cavemen." He has to accept that as a spokesperson for a team from New York and as a paid employee, part of his job is to meet with the media and participate.
Thursday May 17, 2012 - 7:57:18 AM

kingfann: The door to the Devils penalty box wouldn't open so Zajac sat in the Rangers box. Not sure I've ever seen that before...
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 5:31:39 PM

kingfann: Stepan ties it on the power play early in the second, capitalizing on a dumb offensive-zone penalty by Poni.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 5:06:09 PM

kingfann: That could be (in fact, I'm way too lazy to go check the Kings' schedule but I think they actually got shut out in both their games against the Devils this season, although that was early in the year when Murray was still here and before we got Carter). The Rangers, though, look to me like they're giving up almost nothing at even strength so you're going to have to capitalize on the power play against them, which is a problem for the Kings. Then again, although Tortorella won't acknowledge it, the Rangers might be pretty tired. They needed seven games against Ottawa and Washington, and they're probably in for another long series against New Jersey, whether they win it or not. I don't think it's a coincidence that teams who needed seven games to win each of their first two series are 0-38 in the conference finals.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 5:00:37 PM

ericd: The Dev's know if they go down 2-0 their season is done... no way they win 4 of 5 from the Rangers...

Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 4:40:13 PM

Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 4:36:47 PM

b_lo_average: Been slashed by a goalie I the calf before and trying to walk the next day was not fun. Yeah I could function but I was injured, goalie sticks carry some pop. Like I said he won't miss a game but if you think that slash and that boarding left brown feeling peachy I don't know waht to tell ya.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:49:06 PM

kingfann: Lewis should have been standing upright then. When he saw Doan coming, he turned around and then his head was bent over as if he was begging for it to be smashed into the dasher.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:48:47 PM

lowdrive: split second decision to protect the puck. perhaps the thought doan would follow through and just pin him against the boards rather than knock him flying.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:43:32 PM

NoCloutier: Maybe Lewis did it on purpose.. take out their best player
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:41:06 PM

kingfann: Man, just saw Doan's hit on Lewis again. What the hell was Lewis doing? I get that Lewis wants to protect the puck, but when you see a guy coming at you like that, you don't put yourself in that position. I know the rules say it is, but should that really be a penalty when the receiver of the hit does that to himself? Nothing Doan could do there.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:40:16 PM

lowdrive: I didn't say he was angry. I think he responds to them the way a normal person would. It's just not how most coaches who give a crap about their image do it. Kind of refreshing.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:39:26 PM

kingscast: 99% of press conferences are boring to watch because the media can't come up with anything half-decent to ask. I do enjoy a good Tortorella presser though. That guy is hilarious.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:25:56 PM

NoCloutier: yeah the media should be called the tedia
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:25:40 PM

esaki: He doesn't seem angry, he just seems like he thinks the questions are dumb and doesn't know how to respond to them. And he's right. 99% of them are dumb. "Talk about the play of Anze Kopitar tonight." "Talk about the play of Jonathan Quick tonight." "How do you feel about your team's effort tonight?" Good grief, I'd shrink up my face and speak in short sentences too, if I had to answer such boring nonsense.

Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 3:09:39 PM

I had no idea.. based on his scowl behind the bench in Calgary he seemed like a one dimensional task master.. but whats becoming evident is that he is a multifaceted coaching genius.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 1:45:43 PM

notko1: I agree but its getting a little tiresome how Doan seems to be involved in stuff like this
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 1:41:50 PM

Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 8:01:31 AM

azking: Smith is showing that the Coyotes are a completely fragile team that has no idea how to overcome adversity. They really haven't had to much this year and now that they are against the wall, they are folding like a chair. Even Mr. Leader Ray Whitney has basically farted himself out of relevance. At the end of the day, the Coyotes got Pole-Axed last night and they had to goon it up to try and make a statement. Their own newspaper columnist took a dump on them as well in the Arizona Republic.

b_lo_average: I guarantee brown is hurt. Both the slash and boarding are going to have him feel like he was in a car accident. Probably won't keep him from playing but u know he's hurt.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 7:52:08 AM

b_lo_average: Smiths slash was very dangerous and unprovoked. Not like Brown ran him and was getting retaliation he should get a game and a fine. I'll give Doan some slack as Lewis did turn at the last second. 5 min was appropriate but he should get hit with the $2500 too since Lewis was cut. Hanzels hit on the other hand was planned from 15 feet out and clearly an intent to injure, 2 games at least IMO.

Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 6:24:30 AM

notko1: its absurd but you cannot debate that the NHL has a vested interest in them doing well. Thats why a league should never own a team
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 6:18:50 AM

kingfann: Can we please stop with the "The NHL gives the Coyotes special treatment because they own them" treatment? No offense, but it's absurd.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 6:16:12 AM

greenking: watching that slash by smith agian, it should be a one game that was just nasty. it wont happen due to the NHL owning the team but still that was just a total attempt to injure.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 6:05:53 AM

NoCloutier: thx word
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 5:42:51 AM

Word: The Kings are impressive. It's easy to understand all the preseason hype about them, as they have become what many predicted they would be early in the season. Those forwards, led by Brown and Anze Kopitar, are standout two-way players who smother the neutral ice and forecheck and backcheck like fiends. They are fast and strong and tough to handle. www.azcentral.com
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 2:17:37 AM

kingleberry: "The only other team to start a playoffs with an 11-1 record was the 07-08 Pittsburgh Penguins and they did not win the Stanley Cup that year." - Cool! Another opportunity for the Kings to succeed where others have failed!

Word: What a ride, a serious "E" ticket.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 12:36:40 AM

lowdrive: Both the Lakers and Clips could get bounced out this round. Join me in making room on the bandwagon for all the disoriented Lakers fans who will keep showing up to the staples center because they assume the Lakers will still be playing.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 12:35:03 AM

naturallawyer: Make that the Daily News, not the Times. Still, nice to see an article trumpeting the Kings above the Lakers and Clippers, naming the Kings the best show in town out of all the Staples Center tenants.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 12:24:15 AM

naturallawyer: I think the boarding rule ought to be amended to give the ref discretion regarding the game misconduct aspect based on intent. When you commit an infraction that jacks somebody's face up, you probably deserve more than a minor, but not necessarily an ejection.
Wednesday May 16, 2012 - 12:01:10 AM

stephan: The turning around and taunting other fans is do stupid! I hate it!
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - 11:51:44 PM

naturallawyer: Nobody likes to have their building full of the other team's fans (we should know) and it's easy to make sweeping generalizations based on a handful of morons. There were plenty of Kings fans at Sunday's game, most were polite and merely cheered when the Kings did something well. Yotes fans were for the most part well-behaved, though there were a couple that harassed us after the game (middle fingers, rude comments and harassment even toward elderly Kings fans). There were a few Kings fans that embarrassed me a little bit (my #1 pet peeve is turning around and facing the fans behind you when your team scores, and several Kings fans did that), but mostly it was clean fun. Coyotes fans are not in a good mood so it's easy to dump on the opposing fans when you can't say anything critical about the opposing team.

Scribe: They're showing it on NHL Tonight...
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - 11:45:29 PM

Word: What the Kings are doing in the playoffs is staggering in the National Parity League. This has very little to do with the Coyotes. They are a good team that belongs where they are. But this is a juggernaut they are playing. I know it's hard to figure given how lacksidasical they looked at times in the regular year. But to look at them now, they are significantly better than everyone else by a wide margin. They found the right coach to bring it out of them, but looking at them right now there is nobody that can seriously challenge them. Their top line is better by a wide margin than anyone else's. Their goaltender is superb. And they are bigger and stronger and faster than anyone else's team. The only hope New Jersey or New York has is that their series goes long enough that L.A. cools off. They are a machine. Pissing and moaning about whether Whitney or Vrbata could play better is bizarre. You're missing what you're watching. I know some of you are big hockey fans, so clearly you're watching with your hearts not your heads. We could be watching a pretty historic run to the cup. Unless something drastic changes, the Kings may well take 20 or fewer games to win the thing, which is just something that I don't think would be conceivable in the NHL in 2012. They are just a dominant hockey team right now. hfboards.hockeysfuture.com

kingleberry: HAHA! No worries dude! The way the Kings have been playing have affected us all in different ways.

BobKnob: Jesus fucking christ
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - 10:36:20 PM

lowdrive: I'm waiting for the "experts" to come out of the woodwork and point out that they picked the Kings pre-season. I hope that someone is on hand to remind them that they also abandoned that pick, as did anyone who watched them over the first half the season, and only gave them any credit after they had beaten STL. I can't say I believed that this team would do this, but I think we all held out hope that if they got their shit together and snuck in the playoffs they would do some serious damage. Kudos to all the regulars here who kept the faith and kept watching and posting all year. We're not done yet, but damn it feels good to be where we are right now. Also, be kind to those who want to jump on the bandwagon. We don't need to out-fan them. We know who and what we are. =)

schroeder2: The systematic dismantling of the Canucks, and then the Blues, and now (so far) the Yotes, is amazing to me. I've never seen this kind of domination...and from a team who's ego was so fragile just a short time ago. I'm blown away. Really.

NoCloutier: Dustin Brown is proving he's one of the toughest SOBs around
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - 9:23:26 PM

schroeder2: Nope. I'm on the road this week...but I'd I've tossed mine (though Kopi probably deserved that 2nd one and my bald spot needs the coverage)!!!
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - 9:17:11 PM

NoCloutier: schro were you at the game? either way, did you see or hear about any hats on the ice after Carters hattrick?
Tuesday May 15, 2012 - 9:14:13 PM

schroeder2: I'm thinking this isn't colored by my decades-long loyalty to the Kings, but I can't honestly remember a team, any team, owning the Cup playoffs like the Kings have so far...
